Boards in Action: Teen Council
Who They Are
Founded in 2013, the Broomfield Teen Council provides local youth with a platform to explore government operations, develop essential leadership capabilities, serve as positive peer role models and actively engage and inspire young people throughout the Broomfield community. The Teen Council is made up of 12 high school students who all either reside or attend school in Broomfield. There are three executive members: Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. Members range from incoming freshmen to graduating seniors. Members are selected via a competitive application and interview process facilitated by the teens. During the academic year, the Teen Council meets every other week, with both in-person and virtual meeting options available. What They've Been Up To
The 2025-2026 Teen Council organized the 2nd Broomfield Teen Leadership Conference that highlighted the development of teens into community leaders and catalysts for change. The Conference hosted several prominent community partners, which allowed the attendees to connect directly with organizations that are having an impact on the Broomfield community.
During their time on Teen Council, members are learning and growing as civic-minded leaders for their communities. They are participating in important conversations and sharing their perspectives with leaders who make decisions on their behalf. Additionally, they are learning how to work with others from diverse backgrounds and building the community they would like to live in as adults.
For the 2026-2027 year, Teen Council will be working alongside organizers from the Library, Arts, History and Extension Department to lead a teen version of their Civic Conversation Series. Additionally, the Teen Council plans on continuing to develop its relationship with the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes as well as learning from the Broomfield Council members.
The Why
Teens joining the Teen Council have the opportunity to make connections, learn about local government and practice articulating their opinions and building community. The community has a pipeline of actively engaged young people who will learn the fundamentals of how government works and what it takes to work on behalf of the community.
